Grilling Permit Request

Please submit this grilling permit request at least one week (7 days) prior to grilling. If there is a burn ban in place, your request will automatically be denied.

The following safety and location precautions must be followed when grilling on any of TWU's campuses:

BEFORE GRILLING

Any grill type

  • Trained fire watch person(s) must be present at all times during grilling. Acceptable training includes the Fire Safety & Evacuation training available from Risk Management.
  • A means of communicating to TWU Department of Public Safety (DPS) must be available and immediately acceptable to fire watch person(s). A mobile phone, radio, or nearby landline is acceptable.
  • Two (2) ten-pound ABC fire extinguishers shall be kept on stand-by a minimum distance of 10 feet from the grilling area. The fire extinguishers will be kept on opposite sides of the grilling area. Fire extinguishers are available on loan from Risk Management at no cost.

Charcoal/wood grill

  • Charcoal/wood grill(s) shall be at least 10 feet away from all structures and combustible materials.
  • Lighter fluid is NOT permitted. Use of charcoal chimney starters or match-light charcoal are recommended, instead.
  • A metal container must be available for charcoal disposal.
  • A full bucket of water and a wooden stick (or another tool) long enough to stir the ashes in the metal container must also be present.

Propane gas grill

  • Propane gas grill(s) shall be located a minimum distance of 15 feet away from all structures and combustible materials.
  • Propane is NOT permitted in high wind conditions. Wind speeds must be under 15 MPH. Wind speed at the Denton campus can be confirmed at http://denton.weatherstem.com/twu#.
  • Check the propane connections with a light soap and water solution to ensure there are no leaks (a propane leak will produce bubbles). Inspect hoses for cracks, leaks, or brittleness.
  • If the odor of propane gas is smelled, and it is safe to do so, turn off the cylinder valve (clockwise/to the right). If you are unable to safely turn off the valve, immediately evacuate the area and call TWU DPS and/or 9-1-1.
  • Light grill with the lid open; do not close lid until you are sure the grill is lit.

Electric grill

  • Electric grill(s) must be at least 10 feet away from combustible materials.
  • Electric grill(s) used outside, or in wet areas, must be plugged into an outlet equipped with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Alternatively, a portable GFCI may be used.
  • A single extension cord, with a wire gauge required by the manufacturer, may be used. Multiple cords "piggybacked" or "daisy-chained" may NOT be used to cover a long distance.
  • Visually inspect cords, plugs, and all connections for damage and wear prior to grilling.

AFTER GRILLING

Any grill type

  • Fully extinguish heat source and clean grill so it is ready for the next person.
  • Return any borrowed fire extinguishers to Risk Management.

Charcoal/wood grill

  • Place charcoal/ash into a metal container.
  • Place water in the metal container and stir with tool until completely extinguished.
  • Place lid on the metal container for disposal.
  • Deposit extinguished charcoal/ash in a metal trash can or metal dumpster.

Electric grill

  • Unplug grill(s) whenever not in use or when cleaning.
